Description

I try to avoid Miscellaneous photographs whenever I can, but I just really couldn't think of an appropriate category for this one... let me know if you think of a category it could go under.

For our New Years celebration this year, we did something a little different... we had a firework. Fireworks here are illegal without a pyrotechnic license, so the only kind you can buy over-the-counter is sparklers and the little popping things that shoot streamers. I had come across a pile of around 100 sparklers, so I thought I would make a small sparkler bomb out of them (don't let the bomb-part of hte name confuse you; these things are completely safe. They don't explode, there's nothing sudden, the fuse is normally a minute or so long and it's mostly directed upwards and not sidewards). This is done by basically packing a whole bunch of sparklers together into a tight space and lighting one in the center, so they all go off at once. It looks much cooler than it sounds, and it's also just about the safest firework there is. Nothing happens suddenly, no bangs, no explosions, nothing goes flying anywhere, it's very slow.

Afterwards, however, these things get rather hot... hot enough that if you did them on a road, the tar would become liquid-ish again because it would be melted. We now have a nice scorch mark on our concrete driveway from this thing ;) You can feel the heat radiating off its glowing embers long afterwards, and if you get close enough to it you can see that the metal sticks have melted together.

This photo was taken around 45 seconds after it had finished, and as you can see, it was still partially smoking. There is no light source in this photo other than the sparkler bomb (unless if you count starlight, which can't be seen). All colours are natural, nothing to change the colours has been done in post-processing. And look! See Fahrmy, I did something off-center! I let the chaos run wild! What do you think of the insane chaotic moment I had, hmm? ;P
